Business "innovative" La Bruja de Oro
an interview that the magazine Business & Lifestyle makes Xavier Gabriel, owner of the lottery administration Bruixa d'Or, which type says: "We must our growth to innovation and tenacity. "
I think it is necessary to correct this good man, I have no doubt that is a tough and smart businessman, and has taken advantage of the train when it passed him: The bulk of the growth and success of La Bruja de Oro is due to the irrationality of people . No more, no less.
As everyone knows, the sales of lottery tickets in this administration have been growing dramatically since it dealt a big in the 80 and repeated shortly afterwards. not even made him miss a great marketing campaign: an attractive logo, the filly to be in a town called "Luck" in Castilian, and a media campaign and make it free every Christmas, success is assured, although you are tenacious, innovative ... or even too smart. Today, this administration is about 3% of total lottery sales in the country, mostly through internet. It is logical, therefore, to divide more awards over the years that other administrations have not so popular.
But his success is based on the inability of many people to understand that it has exactly the same probability of winning by buying a tenth in this administration that if you buy it in any other: 1 in 85,000.
course you can not accuse the guy of anything objectionable, such as misleading advertising, if people are basically stupid and the media are idiots and still work for free for you, chances are great opportunities arising doing business, that without doubt.
Otherwise, I highly recommend this interesting and fun Article Nothing is free in the Lottery. Merry Christmas!

Comments Kantor post "Oil & Gas: the stage of substitution"
Kantor has written an interesting blog entry analyzing the evolution of gas and oil reserves in the next 30 years and positioning for of gas as a substitute for oil in transport. I recommend reading .
There are many parts of the entry with which I am essentially in agreement and I will not dwell on them. But other parts do deserve some comment, which left me a bit long I've become a post. Since I have read yours, right? ... Right? Then come, I give it 5 minutes ...
... ... .. Let
block by block the post of Kantor.
" 1 .- Global Energy transition: the next thirty years "It says
Kantor:
The truth is that the proliferation of natural gas combined cycle (CC), in Spain and other countries from the 90's, were the result of incentives that then pushed the agents to the power generation technology: the technological and commercial development gas turbines (with a consequent reduction in costs) converged with the emergence of supply contracts and natural gas infrastructure that at that time already considered "simple and cheap." The high performance of these plants, their (relatively) low environmental impact and speed of construction (and low investment costs) were the promise of future power generation to which we all signed up, mostly with very few coal plants contaminants and (if not criminal, yes stupid) nuclear moratorium. Subsequently, the gas rose in price, and also began to proliferate renewables (mostly wind) ... but Kantor considers that any support for renewables is an implicit support for the gas flaring in DC for his position as backup power to the flash of those, the fact is that all companies bet on gas as a "power base" ... while that renewable gas lead in fact to be mere backup power, with fewer and fewer hours of operation but with the imperative of having such power (already analyzed in this and this post.) That is, this supposed "waste gas" causing renewables, there is little and less and less ... in fact the real problem is the "waste economic "implications of this circumstance for those who invested in combined cycle.
So the history of the CC was that gas was a matter of incentives , and were not governments but private companies which made their choice, which they thought best at that time without predict the future impact of renewables and how they were going to engage dramatically the profitability of the cycles.
As the penultimate comment about the electric car, of course is "expensive and propaganda" repeat the mistake that was made in the PV, which is to subsidize the installation (in the case of car purchase) and inefficient technologies are at the beginning of your learning curve, instead of encouraging R & D (in the case of the car on the cells) that allows them commercially viable, say, a decade.
Indeed, on paper (that is, serving only to reservations and available technology) I agree with Kantor that the natural gas car could delay a few decades the problem of liquid fuels ... the question is again, if given incentives, which are also different in different countries, for such replacement occur in practice : in countries that already have a large fleet of vehicles powered by CNG (compressed natural gas), it has not managed to replace only a portion of the park powered by liquid fuel (usually urban taxis), despite its lower cost of ownership. Understand the fundamental reason is the low autonomy.
In other countries, who are not suppliers of CNG infrastructure (although this does not seem very problematic) and, above all, they would have to replace its current fleet with CNG or other adapted car engines , I find it hard to think of what kind of incentives may be individual users to undertake the replacement costs, cargo space dramatically losing even more dramatically and autonomy of use ... as diesel and gasoline remain available at acceptable cost. A recent MIT report commented on this post , gives a rather insignificant role in the use of gas for transportation in the coming years, although it recommends that governments facilitate its use.
Another important point is the geopolitics of supply GN, very different from oil, which causes virtually the only significant use of CNG as vehicular fuel occur in countries deposits of gas or easy access to them.
Apart from the cost of replacement / adjustment of the engines, and the logistical and geopolitical not forget that the combustion of natural gas, although cleaner than clear liquids, only reduces CO2 emissions 26% against these , so can hardly be regarded as a solution in any scenario that should prove necessary radical emission reductions. Even without reasonable to consider such a scenario is not implausible that the successive improvements in the existing diesel and gasoline engines to achieve similar emission reductions ...
Anyway, I will not dwell too much on this particular point because Kantor has promised to talk about it in your next post, as is well-informed guy, we will be cautious and wait patiently for your letter and interest.
Just say to end this block, your last comment on the nanotube electric batteries and hydrogen technology, also seems to bet too much for a "deux ex machina technology" ... To show this, mind you in the following graph where show the energy density of various fuels : you can see where electric batteries, even considering the theoretical limits known so far and nanotube batteries ... and where is the hydrogen, compared to liquid fuels "to use." Do not forget that the relevant parameter to compare the energy density is one in which to use the fuel, ie, "l" on all liquids and gases and "kg" in the case of batteries or fuel solid. And do not forget, either, that energy density is not alone, but combined with ease (economic) use, transport and storage at room temperature, which makes the liquid elements hard to peel when be replaced, possibly daunting task for batteries and for hydrogen .
By the way, take a look at the position of Compressed Natural Gas, and understand why the autonomy of such vehicles is so penalized compared to diesel and gasoline, and even compared to LPG ...
" 3.-A model (with" implicit theorizing ") of gas substitution oil and natural "
Kantor says:
True, but the exploitation of unconventional gas fields (and even more oil) implies a high consumption of water and energy and with high CO2 emissions and contamination of aquifers . Its future evolution is highly dependent on environmental constraints that are imposed (which, again, differ by country), but in all cases were classified by MIT as "manageable, but challenging. "
In any case, the implicit theoretical model Kantor focuses on showing that there are reserves combined (gas and oil) sufficient for the medium term, and that this should not be cause for immediate concern ... when the real problem , in my opinion, is what the model leaves out: not so much the availability of reservations, but the security (or security) of supply what should concern us, and there are strong doubts about it. That is, a problem of "time to market": the question is not so much the amount that remains to be discovered, but whether the industry will be able to develop infrastructure necessary for the speed necessary to supply the expected demand growth.
The key is the ratio P / R Kantor model. While this ratio has not changed much in recent years seems to be consensus that should rise sharply in coming, as demand continues to grow and new discoveries do not replace the extracted oil (see graph below, showing the history of great discoveries and reserves have been added, compared to production):
Beyond a P / R increased, if achieved, can reducing to a few years the availability of reserves calculated by Kantor, there are serious doubts that de facto this fact can be achieved, ie, to increase production at the required rate. The reasons are varied ( taken from Mariano Marzo.-April 2010):
- Exploration and production is increasingly expensive
- World production of conventional oil is declining
- Many countries have passed the zenith
production - conventional production outside OPEC has passed the zenith
- We are increasingly dependent on exports of OPEC
- And, above all, the necessary investments could not materialize in time, due to:
" 4.-Conclusion: Pessimism about the electrification of transport, oil and uncertainty about the adequacy oil and gas "
As for the replacement of oil by gas in the power of MCI (internal combustion engine), wait for the next post of Kantor. In the meantime, I reiterate my doubts that they give the right incentives in most countries so that such a transition is undertaken and major changes in geopolitics and logistics would require GN. I do see its potential contribution in some niches: transportation fleets (limited by lack of autonomy) and urban transport (taxis, buses, trains ...)
Regarding electricity production, differ that electricity production is a solved problem. On the one hand, is a "problem" that differs greatly from country to country. Furthermore, if definitely established a tax on Mt CO 2 issued to incorporate more or less adequately the externalities of this type of fuel, the higher the probability that the gas replacing coal in electricity generation probability to replace the motor oil.
And finally, nuclear energy has its own problems remain unresolved, as we discussed (and comment) on other occasions.
As for the increased weight of rail transport of goods, totally agree, but how MCI replaced in practice? There is an upper bound in each country over which will be essential road transport.
Also in accordance with electrification, although it requires a drastic reduction of losses in the network that still exist.
In any case, to be finalized, the scenario posed Kantor feasible. However, there are other possible scenarios , especially if we take climate change seriously and believe that renewables are here to stay. An outline of how it could be this scenario:
More nuclear (assuming they are created electricity market models that encourage companies to invest in nuclear.) More renewables, but combined with electrical energy storage to compensate for their intermittency (pumping stations and electric cars) and smart grid to manage ... so that the DC capacity to support gas is minimal and can be devoted to replace coal plants. And for transportation, assuming that the pure electric car and possibly take even limited to urban fleets, development of hybrids and yes, maybe CNG public transport and freight.
remains to be seen in any model, will happen in countries with strong projected growth and abundant coal reserves, like China, if we fail to develop technologies for CO2 capture and storage of viable ...
Kantor has written an interesting blog entry analyzing the evolution of gas and oil reserves in the next 30 years and positioning for of gas as a substitute for oil in transport. I recommend reading .
Kantor:
" On the other hand, there is (now) a simple and cheap substitute for oil in internal combustion engines, it is natural gas. As I write these lines on natural gas, a fuel just a little less versatile than oil is burned (criminally) in electricity production plants, while some governments (the ones that have supported the thymus of renewables, and therefore support terrible waste of gas) bet again for the most expensive solution and propaganda, throwing millions into the electric car, when the natural gas car (and its hybrid version) can slow the problem of liquid fuels for at least three decades: the need to have a large fleet of third-generation nuclear reactors (and the first commercial breeders operating) and electric batteries for carbon nanotubes, or alternatively, a viable technology of hydrogen as an energy . "
" is expected that these unconventional reservoirs can supply half the demand for natural gas . "

- We are increasingly dependent on exports of OPEC
- And, above all, the necessary investments could not materialize in time, due to:
- Policy pumping rhythm control in producing countries
- Less investment opportunities for international companies and petronacionalismo
- Political constraints, war and terrorism, lack of
- A qualified personal
- EROI (Energy Return of Energy Investment ) increasingly unfavorable.
........
And finally, nuclear energy has its own problems remain unresolved, as we discussed (and comment) on other occasions.

What Is A Catchy Slogan For Ballet?
The deniers and pensions debate
I will say that what is about Climate Change and the extension of retirement age, under discussion these days in several countries. Most will say not much. However, in both cases we have to face the same question, it is necessary to answer: which public policies must be implemented now to address an event that will take place in the distant future but with a high level of uncertainty, but with potentially catastrophic consequences.
Some will say that warnings about climate change have a lot of science behind (true), while economic models can not be so, or at least be subject to greater uncertainty and greater likelihood of failure in their predictions, as past often (also true). However, the particular case before us supports a powerful counter-argument: climate models also have a high level of uncertainty while the pension calculations are relatively easy to make, since the current demographic curve, which is the main factor (although not only) of future pensions, it is well known.
In the case of climate change, no scientist or economist and puts serious doubt on focusing the debate on what is the best way to confront him, that is, what public policies (in this case at the global level) are more effective and also economic development do not compromise the present or future generations. And about that debate, bitter, much remains unsaid. Denying climate change deniers are only the activists who through ignorance, ideology, or more commonly, economic interests, deny most like an invention a group of scientists from the United Nations.
For pensions, a problem far more simple as it affects only a group of countries (those who advocate a particular welfare state and a particular demographic curve) and also you can address each country individually, is also acting the deniers : not only discuss what policies are best suited to address the problem (which would be legitimate) but deny the very fact that pensions are in danger by diverting attention to ideological reasons or dark interests which they exist behind those who promote change.
is common among denialists , sometimes strongly ideological and sometimes strongly supported by other interests, accusing his rivals of the same. I attached an example I do not know if it is backed by other interests, but certainly ideological: this article one of the "deniers of pension most followed in the media.
But I'm not interested here fester further debate. Let us agree that there may be debate. Accept that, despite the demographic curve, several points that may affect the future of pensions (immigration, productivity ...) on it is difficult to predict its evolution, and therefore it allows for some level of discussion. You can go into details in this and this post.
What I think is important to note here, however, is how they take each other, and above all to be taken by governments to tackle these problems, ie what should be the sensible attitude when an event, despite their level of uncertainty, has a non-negligible risk of becoming catastrophic if nothing is done. You see, climate change again ...
course, I do not blindly bet on "the enormous technological advances" (In the words of Vicente Navarro), as if they give out of necessity, or bet blind GDP growth based on history in which no account is taken of what produced them and therefore could not happen again, etc. ., is the right attitude. As I do not think that betting on huge technological advances, yet glimpsed energy revolutions and radical change in attitude and wasteful consumerist society ... be sensible ways of tackling climate change, but all this could actually happen (hopefully) because prolonged periods of time, almost anything can happen. Notice that I said "almost." And "can happen."
But the attitude of denial goes beyond its commitment to "good things will happen for sure." It accuses those who warn of problems that are dangerous representatives of ideology "neoliberal" comeniños, defending the interests of the right and the capital as well (come back to the last part of the article by Navarro) that have a huge presence in the media that the ombudsmen suffered like him, are denied. This narrative is particularly harmful because it easily Creek citizenship increasingly crushed by the crisis, because he has an enemy, however fictional it may be, against which to fight.
This part Finally, I can not resist commenting on it, is the funniest of the entire article by Navarro, you will see: in the English media more serious (which I assume are those he is concerned) is offered to any platform ( Niño Becerra even ) to say almost any blunder in equal conditions to any serious scientist or Nobel prize, but the reading public has the faintest idea what the background of each other when to hold such stands. To focus the argument a bit: what more we would like to leave some more in the press, radio and TV people can do rigorous analysis and present debates further afield of political confrontation and ideology ... because if we return to the last part of the article by Navarro, which presented as an example to follow the "analysis" that defend this kind of reality subverters grouped ATTAC, breaded go ...
But we do not disperse, and return to the fundamental argument of the post: fiaríais you your future "Many good things can happen"? Would not it be wise to put the means to solve what we fear might happen if you finally do not pass those "good things"? As if finally passed, amend the policy would certainly be less expensive that if, through inaction, we allow the worst end happening.
This, at least IMHO. UPDATE

Topic: Matching Method in a 2x2 system
matching method is a small variation of substitution seen before. To solve a system of equations by this method is to clear an unknown, the same in the two equations and match the result of both punts, which gives a simple equation. The phases of the process are:
-> match expressions are obtained and the linear equation is solved a mystery that is.
-> value is calculated by substituting the other unknown and found in one of the equations clear first step.

A reality check ... and Richard Dawkins
been a long time that Madrid would take the subway to go to work. Today I had to. And in the short 40 minute journey I have had occasion to give me a bath of humanity, literally, because in the rush hour in Madrid humanity spreads throughout the corridors of the platforms and inside trains, around you and you wet and times until you drown.
not think I'm a prude: All my life I used the metro, and I am a big proponent of this public transport, essential services, essential and basic any big city. But it should be noted that the metro during rush hour is far from that fast and comfortable means of transportation that we want to sell in the ads (especially on certain routes and certain sections) and can become a little torture. So much so that many people directly rejects it and prefer to consume minutes and minutes in the jam, but at least comfortably seated, with the air conditioner and set to music or the distilled wisdom of his early morning todólogos favorite radio talk.
Anyway, I was ready to enjoy the ride that lets you do that the metro and not the car: read . However, things began to happen.
First it was a pickpocket. Voices at the bottom of the car made me take my attention the fascinating experiment of Dr. Richard Lenski with 45,000 generations of bacteria Escherichia Coli in his laboratory at the Michigan State University, which shows dramatically, to the dismay of the creationists, the effects of natural selection front of our eyes and in a very short space of time.
But in a very short space of time and also before my eyes a scruffy looking guy slipped away down the platform to shouts of "cheeky", "card", "scoundrel" ... as a man of a certain age warned other than the above had been about to steal his wallet and had it not been for the warning cries of this gentleman.
always occurs to me in these cases what would I have done if the pickpocket was acting on my side and I warned. At the end of the day, the guy had a bad pint, and could churn violently to a cry of warning, especially in a confined area can feel very trapped. And, do you want to tell you, I'm those who think that the portfolio of a stranger, not even my own, deserves a knife. Perhaps it would be wiser to stop acting and get off with him at the next stop and follow as discreetly warn the police with the phone (provided that the station had coverage) or a pair of security officer that you are there and they were not threatening occupied a top-manta. Unfinished
to resolve this deep moral questions that gnawed me, I went back to reading the book by Richard Dawkins , saying to myself with relief that this would be unlikely that he could see no pickpocket acting very close to it was.
But something happened a few minutes more. So fascinating (though much more inexplicable) and the experiment of Dr. John Endler guppies fish in Venezuela, an experiment that clearly shows the evolution (yes, that Darwin's Dangerous Idea ) occurs before our eyes (I know I repeat myself), sometimes at astonishing speeds.
One lady got up to alight at the next station, leaving the seat free newspaper had been reading. You do not know if this act is a courtesy for another passenger to take the newspaper and read in turn, or an example of the despicable practice Hispanic leave our garbage in any place to another to collect. In any case, a plump female representative of what we might call a certain malice "animal of the industrial estate" sat atop the newspaper while browsing suddenly her own copy. In the front seat, while a girl dressed and coiffed with a drawing style monotonous observer (not me of course) would define as "typical chonis the South" spoke to her to ask if you could bring the newspaper on which he had sat. To the astonishment of all who were going around, the fat woman reacted by lifting the paper not see the face of another while muttering an expletive. The young man looked surprised and mumbled that the chick must be crazy. The thing is why not have happened were it not for the first kept mumbling unintelligible things, until he heard a loud insult. At that time, the angry young man stood up and walked toward each other, loudly taunted the insult and insult his time. From here begins a "conversation" a shouting match between two of the most absurd thing you can imagine, while the other occupants of the car were the guardians of silent witnesses, unhealthily fascinated by the degree of verbal violence that was occurring for no reason apparent.
the end the girl got her newspaper and the tone of the insults of both went down to a stop, when everyone else went back to what we were doing, but with a little less confident in the rationality of mankind.
For those who are convinced of the power of reason and that words are to be understood, is a blow to observe behavior like this. You can always say that the lady was a little crazy, and that the girl was too sensitive and, finally, both a little greengrocer. But unfortunately not so simple: maybe they were both "normal" people, people come to their jobs, with some interest by newspaper articles, etc.. The only thing I got to thinking, is that the "reasoning" of creationists, Dawkins's book mentions often seem to me a little less incomprehensible in light of the waste material inside some of our brains. And after this brilliant conclusion, I dove back into reading the book to find the key to natural selection that allowed me to understand the stupid behavior of some subspecies of Homo sapiens .
Yes, I know: this is just an anecdote, a casual event that may not be repeated in months, no conclusions can be drawn. But Look, it's Monday, it begins a tough week of work (for which we are fortunate to have one) and do not tell me it's more fun not to start it with a little amateur sociology, psychology touches bar bar ...
been a long time that Madrid would take the subway to go to work.
You see friend, we've fired. Rubbing
remember when I said goodbye to the Creator (real blogger politiks ) who, citing the Beto Alonso said something like: When asked why he did not return, he answered something like, "because I made a farewell party. If had made a tribute match could come back, but when did a farewell party you can not play again. "
forgot him a farewell party blog: I left a post had been mediocre the past and disappeared. I think it was fair. Also, does a very good time that we nurture this space with decent posts, and reached the final but no one dared to say goodbye : I think it was four years.
The new replaces the old, and a shame because the new ones are good (I mean, why not come before?). Best not to compete against them: I see ELY, ForoEconomico and Economiaposible. Serial continue to roll and flawlessly.
In my case, I think it was an interesting time but has completed, we are clearly on something else. I do not rule mutate appear elsewhere ('ll let you know dear reader).
Of course, thank you very much for all years. Bermúúú with fries, and gudchouuu.

"Seven proposals to the Government on electricity." Discussion
Foundation Energy Studies, linked to the UPM, has sent to the Ministry of Industry a proposed electrical model for Spain, divided into 7 key points, summarized can read here.
As one of the signatories was a professor of mine, and another was boss of mine, I can not resist commenting, except that addresses issues of primary concern to this blog.
I do not find anything to say that the English electric model is Kafkaesque. The successive "non-models" and ill-considered decisions of the different governments have led to a situation in which the energy industry pays a possibly more expensive than necessary (affecting its competitiveness), consumers are uninformed and poorly willing to take the "cost of being" involved in electrification, and companies face regulatory uncertainty unworthy of a developed country.
behaviors that have brought us this far, and promise to turn the situation into disastrous if you persist, I summarize as follows:
1 .- Planning mix. Very clear, perhaps most important to begin with. And anticipate problems, some already mentioned in this blog, for example, here.
2 .- Demand Management. They focus on flattening the ends, using storage systems such as pumping stations and electric vehicles. Crucial, especially the former, because the latter is more uncertain in the longer term. But the pumping stations, someone explain to me why this country is focused on building these plants, known and available technology, for all the country but mainly associated with wind farms, rather than throwing money at solar farms. Pumping stations More Now!
surprising, however, that no measures are talking about reducing their own demand (savings and efficiency), the short-medium term is the "energy source" that has more potential ...
3 .- Ensure sufficient electric power park firm, not subject to the vagaries of the present necessarily renewable. In three ways: storage by pumping stations (again), longer life and ease the nuclear potential future nuclear projects, and "capture technology" to coal plants. In this last one is where I think we fall into the goodism ... because the rule of capture technologies is preliminary, and storage of CO 2 (required subsequent step) do not say ... surprised a bet as clear a very uncertain technology. 4 .-
Renovables. assume that our plans for them involves the installation of adequate backup power, forward storage media (bombeo!!) And can still not be enough to handle the variability (and talk about it in this post ) . Therefore, we must increase international interconnection capacity.
One important point: not subsidize mass deployments!. Implement competitive-bid for renewable technologies and to subsidize R & D to reduce costs.
5 .- Energy Policy with a commitment to technology and support the R & D companies (not just public projects), particularly in these fields:
- Confining CO 2 . As I said before, is the emerging technology and uncertain.
- Energy Storage ... such as batteries for electric cars, one of the few points where they touch the issue of transportation is so important!.
- intelligent transport networks and distribution. And I know that power is moving on these issues. Public support for such projects seems much more cost effective than subsidies and photovoltaic electric car in which we live today.
6 .- Rethinking the design and operation of the electricity market and its regulation . Very necessary, as mentioned, but are played in this section are several points that I think are questionable: first, the group takes from the beginning that we must find lower costs of electricity, but advocates for including externalities the cost of fossil energy ... I wonder if these goals are reconcilable.
For Moreover, talk of " pay within the extension of life of the hydroelectric and nuclear to allow them to benefit businesses, consumers and taxpayers ." This is important because it is not clear how they say it, but we must make clear the sense that it must be said extensions plant life already paid, the costs of investment have been paid and guaranteed (CTC. .. ) by consumers, pose additional profits for power if the electricity is sold at the price of the pool. This is a misappropriation profits on consumer resource, and must be urgently corrected . The power must return some of this additional profits via tariff reductions, for example.
7 .- Distribution of objectives between the Ministries of Industry ( definition of energy policy ) and Science and Innovation (technological research into energy ). And above all, enhancing the CNE as an evaluator of the regulatory system and guarantee its enforcement.
In short, a proposal that plays almost all major points, but little new in fact, except for the proposed auction for renewable technologies, and surprised by the importance it attaches to the capture technologies CO 2, (in my opinion very optimistic) and little that speaks of saving measures and energy efficiency (in my opinion the best "alternative energy source" that have short to medium term .)
- regulation. Continuous change of approach, and often contradictory ways, which makes it very difficult to measure its investment companies. Take for example the policy of subsidies to subsidize the endemic mass installations of technologies that are at the beginning of their learning curve (solar photovoltaic or electric car at the moment) or without verifying that it meets the desired objective (CHP in the past), joins the continuous change and the regulation approach "based on ideas" (which is no stranger to the personality of the current Minister of Industry) or to meet political objectives of very short range, as the recent decree of coal. Let us add another bad English: the absence of regulatory bodies with sufficient influence, in this case, the CNE, which could have but is not allowed.
- making decisions based on ideology ... as the nuclear freeze in time, or the refusal to extend the lifetime of nuclear weapons against the technical reports ... or cronyism and power struggles such as Enel-Endesa case.
- economic problems not completely resolved or explained , as the costs of transition to competition in the past and the tariff deficit in this, that no government wants to tackle and you end up paying consumers.
- technical aspects need urgent reforms and the functioning of the electricity pool and the difficult relationship between the price of electricity and costs.
- ... and others I'm sure I left in the inkwell, and reflect on the whole a dramatic lack of long-term planning and clear objectives "country" that go beyond the 4 year term.
1 .- Planning mix. Very clear, perhaps most important to begin with. And anticipate problems, some already mentioned in this blog, for example, here.
2 .- Demand Management. They focus on flattening the ends, using storage systems such as pumping stations and electric vehicles. influence of culture in the economy: the use of easy explanations and scientific method
At a time now I read in some articles and heard some talk shows the old question of how cultural factors influence the economy, or more specifically, the level of development (wealth, in short) in various countries.
Given the economic climate crisis and the recent troubles in Spain and other countries in the group of PIGS their debt, these "acute" ideas have proliferated in the media. I highly recommend that you read this article from El Pais: " Economics little understanding of gods", because even if the treatment is rather superficial and frivolous, brings to the table several interesting issues and summarizes the views of several economists and sociologists regard.
The question is whether religion (and more generally, cultural aspects of a society) have as much weight as to condition the economic development of countries. This topic has been discussed for some time, at least since Max Weber defended the supposed advantages of morality against the Catholic Protestant when doing business. Other times, however, and somewhat in contradiction with the above, has spoken of the advantages of religions "Western" interventions and materials on the East (Buddhism, Confucianism ...) rather push an individual toward the withdrawal, introspection and rejection of the material, thereby deducting the eastern countries would never become economic powers, and would always overwhelmed by the pressure of the West.
My position on this is clear: not accept explanations that serve to explain everything, and therefore explain nothing . For starters, there are many exceptions to the thesis that religion affects the wealth of nations: there are now, and has been at almost any time in history when we can think of "taking the picture." Among other things, for the economic development of most countries has been changing steadily since the Industrial Revolution, albeit unevenly and with acceleration and braking in under what historical moment and in what geographic location ... but with a tendency overall growth (with the exception of sub-Saharan Africa). Well, to paraphrase economist Sala i Martin, " you can not explain something that changes rapidly by factors that either no change or do so very slowly " (such as religion and culture). Incidentally, the terms "culture" or "cultural factors" are sufficiently vague to accommodate them anything.
Today there are many countries that are richer Catholics than Protestants in their environment. And the economies of Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan or South Korea and increasingly China, also contradict the thesis of "Eastern religions."
Why, then, is so pervasive the idea that religion and culture influence the wealth of nations? Very simple: because it's an easy explanation, very handy for those who do not want to do hard work, scientific work ... it seems that naturally explains everything, but does not explain anything, that is, just as pseudoscience. narrative is easily understood by everyone and also feeds our prejudices : the Irish are drunken bums and compared with the British, the Anglo-Saxon Protestants are industrious and enterprising as compared to Catholics Mediterranean, more likely to resignation and silly soup, the Muslims are fanatics and given to treachery Orientals are submissive and lacking in leadership and creativity ... and, finally, blacks are less intelligent but have a member
long ... Take for example the argument put forward by the sociologist Enrique Gil Calvo on European countries in the linked article: the three "degrees of being" (Nordic / social democratic-liberal Anglo-Saxon and continental-Democrat), the illustrious professor directly related to religion (Lutheran, Calvinist, Catholic), mixing in the shaker also the "degree tolerance for corruption. " Not seem to mind putting the PIGS in the behavior group "continental" Democrat "even though no one is continental (Ireland) and some non-Catholic (Greece). I said, anything goes if it confirms our prejudices. Because when the PIGS were doing well, (particularly well to Ireland and Spain) I guess it was because its citizens stopped going to church.
Is it possible to give some alternative explanation for the crisis of Pigs, which do not fall into the "easy solution" of religion and culture? Well, we can make the attempt ... for example, I recommend this article Javier Andrés NEG's blog about global imbalances.
thinkers have to say that I respect more than Gil Calvo also point to a long time "argument culture." As an example, read this article economist Jeffrey Sachs on growth in the "Buddhist economics" of Bhutan, which is indeed a beautiful story. You can find similar success stories (although rare) in other countries that seem to stand little bit about the dismal fate of its neighbors: the first that come to mind are Costa Rica, Central America, and Botswana, sub-Saharan Africa . What can you say to explain your success? Well, people would say that is dedicated to studying development economics, the problem is that you can say very little, or at least be very cautious when it comes to explaining why some countries succeed and others do not ... we must observe, collect data, linking variables, build a model and test it. I know it is not easy. How easy is to use religion, race, to black culture, the cruelty of the colonial past ... But if we are more careful, if we take into account all factors that can influence, and we can see even in the article Bhutan Sachs (though he prefers Buddhism as ultimate explanation), see how they arise analysis of issues related to good governance, market opening, the intelligent use of your natural resources or other advantages, institutional stability, etc ... and ultimately, making the correct political and economic decisions that transcend ( fortunately) culture, religion and to some extent, the geographical environment that has touched you.
course, the answer to the question of why the wealth of nations is far from clear: it is an exciting research field of development economics. And as this field of research that eventually could be assigned a role to cultural or religious. My own opinion is not to deprive them entirely of a role: I think these aspects, the best, " modulate" a society's response to certain policies. That is, could influence the degree and ease of implementation of certain policies and therefore explain small differences in the "way to grow" from one country to another. But not to the point of influencing its success or failure. But this is a hypothesis which, like all others, must be subjected to empirical trial.
Meanwhile, flee from easy explanations on matters that are far from being resolved.
UPDATE: An interesting study related to the topic of the post you can see it in the blog Neoconomicón said: "Democracy storm."

Linear Equations Systems of Linear Equations
Unit 2: Systems of Linear Equations
Topic: Classification of systems of linear equations without using your graphics
When looking for the solution of a system of linear equations we need to know if it is solvable or not. Using the graphical method is a way to show whether or not there is a solution to the system. When you have some kind of solution the system is consistent, but may have only one solution or infinite solutions. So we have a consistent system-independent or consistent-dependent. Consistent-independent systems have a single solution and its graph are the lines found in a single point. The system which are a subtraction on the other and has infinite solutions is called a consistent system-dependent. Inconsistent systems are those whose lines are parallel and no real solution.
